CACTUS CROWN album cover: DEVIN MILLER

Barachos y Banditas,

Dakota Slim had originally planned to release the new long-form E.P. CACTUS CROWN on Valentine’s day 2017 – alas, this was a premature ambition as we are in the rites of spring and I am not yet finished with the unexpected lil’ opus.

PROMO 02  “WASTED BONES” (Animation by Logan Ford)

The tracks, originally composed post-Halloween 2017 with a crippled hand on a three string guitar, were intended to be sparsely orchestrated and seldom accompanied –  an acoustic testament of solemn hymnals of sorts… again, alas, here I am deep into post-production and the monster I am incubating became another ramshackle, bedroom opus akin to the 2007 release, HITHERTO THE AMINALS.  An unexpected return to the solo sonic-lust of original sample-led rhythmic sequences, experimental analog tracking and bombastic orchestration has indeed engulfed CACTUS CROWN and though this grew to be quite the project, I am happy for it’s obsessive evolution.

Slinking out of the throws of a cosmic inner shift that left me one handed and solemnly solitary in the beginning months of this year, I rekindled my love for solo production and all it throws. After the years-long conceptually ambitious collaborative effort of my band, SPARE SPELLS, in the midst of recalibration whilst inching towards the completion of last year’s conceptual epic, THE NARROWS‘, accompanying comic book (see below), the specter of Dakota Slim rose to exorcise new material, now deft and deliberate and headstrong into a new era.

While I take my time to round out CACTUS CROWN and ready it for imminent release (for sure this April), you can taste the southwest soaked cacophonous cornucopia of sonic manifestations that will riddle the album’s maddening production:

From the Ethiopian-jazz inflected haunt of CC’s opener, NIGHT THIEF,

to the sparse and live-tracked psychic ballad, WEIGHTLESS,

The Pentecostal Surf of the theme composed for  Wayward Worship’s OCCULTCAST, WESTWARD HO,

CACTUS CROWN is sure to be fine culmination of Dakota Slim’s years of experimentation in self-produced hymnals.  A journalistic document of the moon cycles between Halloween and Spring – a feverish snapshot of the end of a partnership, the fervor and beauty of a new love and the narrative of a man trying to make sense of the contradictory extremes that riddled him.

In any case, keep your hearts crossed and your eyes peeled – the tenth (?) release from my perennial sonic identity (15 years old!) is sure to usher DAKOTA SLIM back into the fold from a silent, scheming, somnambulant saunter.

“DESERTER PSALMS”: A 16 TRACK DS RETROSPECTIVE OUT NOW

image

DESERTER PSALMS: HYMNALS FOR A Dead Decade (2003 – 2013)

This, is the beginning of the end for DAKOTA SLIM.  Sadistically honoring a fictional character’s impending demise, I’ve compiled 16 of the most un-crindge worthy “Slim Hymns” into a full length release.

Lengthy Linear Notes are being compiled as we speak, as I had a lot of help from some of the most clever artists working today helping me realize this shadow-self, and for that I am forever grateful

“DESERTER” is available in all major online digital music retailers such ad iTunes or Amazon

But this isn’t THE END…

I still have one more plan for Slim… entitled “ZOZOBRA” ; His life’s work and the opus that I’ve been scheming and mapping for the last decade.

“ZOZOBRA” is essentially a gonzo-histo-folkloric comic about the death of Dakota Slim and the trial and tribulations each Bardo of the afterlife has in store for him.

So before I truly kill him, I figured he was  due a collection of the least-terrible songs from his decade long, and 7+ album, legacy errr career errr prolonged artistic hiccup…

This compilation should be the bookend record from a character that started as a trivial pursuit of fiction to mask my artistic loneliness and experimentation, now I am ready to set him on the path of becoming a ghost, made of the wanderlust dreams of a young desert deserter…

“REVEL” by REVELATOR ROSZ

KAMEN ROSS sketched the portrait.

KAMEN ROSS sketched the portrait.

This was my first major foray into writing, performing, producing, and distributing an E.P. in 4 days through the intense use of sigilism (as evidenced in the cover art) and culling sonically-astral “automatic” compositions from a basement meditation. What birthed? “REVEL:” the 5 song E.P. and my first release under the REVELATOR name. It totally utilized what I refer to as “PRAGMAGICK” or magick, through means of focus and execution (like practice or rehearsal) for practical means such as an honest piece of work to help ends meet – and hopefully mend.
The songs vary in style and vibe. Thing is, for every song there were hundreds of invocations and conjurations, I only chose to follow five of them.
The 4 days were damp and desolate, mixed with teeth gnawing integrity – I am ,actually, building a home studio and  an editing bay in the “terror-firma” known as our basement. Through the dreaded webs and rat rollicking I managed to detune and calibrate THIS piece of art:

It may or may not help boost my forever – ramshackle ways, but I gotta girl to impress. A love. I got friends  I mean to never distress. I got love. More so now, that I had to be productive in pragmatically producing an instantaneous artifact.  An artifact that may somehow sell to those who care to hear my 4 day triumph over writing, production, performing, and editing but also my madness and synapse lapsed moon shivers and shakes recorded on tape.

The five songs adequately represent my thought process if a millisecond were represented as exactly 20 minutes in song.
Whie SPARE∆SPELLS continues to perform visually and musically ambitious sets while rounding out a collection of demos (for a very conceptual plan) and DAKOTA SLIM stays quiet for just a little longer – I figured my role in WE, THE HALLOWED and in the soon to be posted show, WAYWARD WORSHIP, as REVELATOR (more a lavishing lingerer than a revealer) would enact the responsibility of measuring my most obscure work.
It’s getting frosty here in the Oregon perma-dusk. I manifested through magikal means a product that might help keep me warm. And keep that love confident. And friends not stressed.

From the Basement,
REV. KEATS ROSZ
